Animal portraits commissioned for oil and acrylic paintings of dogs, cats, and horses.

A painting isn't meant to replace a photograph or a computer enhanced picture. If this is what you want, then go in that direction rather than a painting. A portrait is done to catch the spirit and essence of your pet the way you would always like to remember him or her. Each portrait I do is as special to me as your pet is to you. I'll ask you to spend time telling me about your pet so we can work together to produce a portrait you will cherish for a lifetime. It is through the eyes that you find the true soul of an animal, so I place a great deal of importance on this feature. Before I begin a painting I always talk with my clients to learn as much as possible about the personality of their pet. I may ask you if your pet is always energetic or is he or she the couch potato type? Does you pet have a sense of humor as many do? What are the traits which make your pet special to you? All these things go into a painting to catch the personality and character of your pet.

Commissioning a Summerhill Studios portrait is a simple process and follows the steps described below:

  • You e-mail or call to set up a time for a telephone conversation to discuss your pet -- breed, size, personality, etc., and determine your preferences for the portrait. At this stage we need to decide if you want a head study or the entire animal. What position you think your pet looks best -- sitting, standing, or lying down, and, make a decision about the background color you would like. Based on these choices I well explain exactly what kind of photos will be needed so you can send them to have the portrait painted. Remember, your portrait is based on the photos you send so it's important they capture the animal in their best pose. In addition, we will discuss whether you want your portrait framed, and if so I can recommend the best color and type of frame that would complement your portrait.
  • At this stage a $125.00 non-refundable deposit is required to commission the portrait and have it painted.
  • When your portrait is completed, usually in 4-6 weeks, a clear photo of the portrait will be sent to you for final approval.
  • Upon your approval, the balance of $125.00, plus $35.00 shipping cost is due. When this payment is received your finished portrait will be packed and shipped to you.
